$122… for a PHONE BOOK?!?

I consider myself fairly adept at locating information, and the internet is one of the the sources I use regularly. Still, there are some times when it’s just plain easier, more convenient, or even necessary to use a book.

Today, a friend of mine asked how to get a printed copy of the AT&T Yellow/White pages covering Sarasota FL. “Easy!”, I replied, “just call AT&T’s Directory Resource Center at 1-866-329-7118 and order one.”  A quick call, followed by a transfer to the Yellow Pages, followed by the usual 10-minute wait and a plethora of questions, revealed that a copy of the 2011 phone book for Sarasota FL costs US$122 DOLLARS (but, that does include shipping & handling… however, they didn’t offer another one free just for paying separate shipping & handling).

Wait…$122 dollars for a book that local Sarasotans could find piles of FOR FREE in the lobby of their nearest hotel lobby or Denny’s entrance? Is this a “special edition” or “limited copy”, hand-printed in calligraphy on parchment by cloistered monks, replete with ornate drawings and bound in leather, and express shipped by carrier pigeons?? Unbelievable!

This got me thinking: $122 for a (roughly) 700-page book…the Reconciliation Bill for ObamaCare was 2,309 pages…there are 535 members of the US Congress…factor in the usual Federal Government markup…”bit of gold paint, make good“… it’s no wonder (a) the USA is running a huge deficit, and (2) Health Care Bill had to be passed before it was read!

Goin’ with the (Web 2.0) Flow…

Gosh, this “Web 2.0” stuff sure is intimidating! Despite vaguely knowing precisely what is it, there’s an entire industry built around the concept, involving hundreds upon hundreds of “Web 2.0 Tools” to choose from. Frankly, I’m amazed I got my website up and running without crashing the entire interweb!

So, imagine my relief to find this handy flowchart designed to make one small (?) portion of my Web 2.0 experience a little easier (click image to enlarge):

Flowchart: Where to update my social status?

For those who are curious, it looks like most of my material should be posted on “LinkedIn(which I already do, so I guess the chart’s pretty good), and on “Don’t Post it!(coincidentally, my first choice for the name of this website..LOL).

Kudos to Daryl Lang of BreakingCopy.com, and…

There’s Something about Herman Cain?

Lately, I’ve been hearing something or other about how maybe Republican Presidential hopeful Herman Cain may or may not have done or said something which might remotely be interpreted as “sexual harassment” by at least two but who-knows-how-many-more as-yet-unidentified women, each of whom might have received a financial settlement over 10 years ago but we can’t know for sure since it most likely was covered by a Nondisclosure Agreement that the lawyer of one of the unknown accusers is having trouble finding and who may have already said the whole situation isn’t worth pursuing anyway.

Frankly, I’m at a loss to explain why I’m having trouble recalling any specific details of this situation: After all, Google lists almost 400 unique results on “Herman Cain harassment” during the last week alone, and it seems the site Politico published 90 stories on it over a 5-day period (wait… now it’s 94 stories over a 6-days…more stories than they published on Obama’s ties to known terrorist Bill Ayers or real estate swindler Anthony Rezko).

Perhaps I only pay attention when the media reports actual fact, instead of rumor, hearsay, innuendo, or speculation… or, perhaps I’m just too pre-occupied reading up on the alleged or actual activities of Democrat President Barack Obama, Democrat Governor Eloit Spitzer, Democrat Senator Anthony Weiner, Democrat President Bill “B. J.” Clinton, Democrat President John F. Kennedy, and the Reverend Jesse Jackson.

Sorry about that: I’ll try to be a little more attentive to the mainstream media from now on.

Update: I’m paying a bit more attention, now that an accuser, Sharon Bialek, has gone public with details of an incident allegedly taking place during 1996 or 1997 – I don’t yet know if any of her allegations can be substantiated by fact, but at least I can read up on some facts about her past.

So Wrong …on only One Level

Published in “The Daily Weekly”, by the Seattle Weekly:

Jasha Lottin, Portland Nudist, Broke No Laws by Killing, Gutting Horse, then Posing Naked Inside Carcass

I’ve got no problem with Jasha (she’s attractive), Portland (unless the Trailblazers beat the Celtics), nudism (especially if you’re attractive) or the legal killing of horses (which, apparently, hasn’t been done in the USA since 2007, and certainly not in Mexico)… but, that “carcass” thing: Couldn’t we just leave that to the likes of Luke Skywalker, “K“, Seth McFarland Stewie GriffinPeter Griffin, Chris Griffin, or perhaps the Bible?

BTW Jasha, speaking of Luke Skywalker… If you’re now suffering from a creative roadblock, you might consider this, or possibly this.

NLRB “Concidence”? More like “Myopia”!

Doug Ross @ Journal blogged on 11/02/11 that while the NLRB came down hard on Boeing‘s new 787 Dreamliner assembly plant in South Carolina, a Right-to-Work state, to date they’ve been completely silent on General Electric’s new jet engine parts manufacturing facility in Auburn, Alabama, another Right-to-Work state. He chalks it up to coincidence that GE’s CEO, Mr. Jeffry Immelt, also happens to be the person President Obama’s hand-picked to head his Jobs Council to put America back to work.

“Coincidence”? I suggest it’s probably a NLRB myopic view of protecting labor at all costs – even if it means laborers eventually lose out to outsourcing, offshoring, or the cancellation of jobs creation plans altogether. A quick Google search reveals that, between 01/01/09 and 10/14/11, General Electric announced the creation of 10,000 jobs in the United States involving eight different industries across seventeen states (click  for their impressive graphic):

Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Kentucky, Colorado, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Hold on a second: Aren’t those last eight states “Right-to-Work” states? Yep, they sure are, and, collectively, they account for 2,505 of GE’s announced new jobs in the US. I emphatically applaud General Electric’s plans to create 10,000 jobs – we sure need them – but it’s just a sneeze in a hurricane compared to the over 340,000 new jobs per month we’re going to need for President Obama to make good on his repeated promise… not [to] rest until everyone has a job, a good wage and benefits.

Now, unlike the NLRB singling out Boeing, I’m not singling out GE: Have you read or heard of the NLRB complaining against other aerospace firms like Brasil’s Embraer Executive Aircraft in Melbourne, FL, Japan’s Honda Aircraft Co. in Greensboro, NC; or Piper Aircraft Inc. of Vero Beach, FL – aerospace firms with recently new plants located in Right-to-Work states and employing non-Union labor? Neither have I.

(BTW: Having worked in the gas turbine industry for almost two decades, I’d love to work for GE… in fact, Ms/Mr. GE HR Person, if you’d like to help Mr. Immelt’s achieve his goal to impress Mr. Obama, perhaps you’d like to check out my credentials. And, if possible, I prefer to work at a job located above the Mason-Dixon Line…maybe Virginia or Metro DC area if the fit is right. Thanks in advance!)

In my humble opinion, the NLRB well-publicized attacks on  Boeing’s new South Carolina plant – the largest single corporate investment ever in the state’s history, and one designed to operate as a 100% renewable energy site to boot  – while remaining totally silent on other aerospace firms with similar activities, appears to be far more than simply “coincidence”.

Update: “far more” appears to be a serious understatement.

So Wrong …on so many Levels!

“FITCHBURG, MA —  The Rev. Lowe Dongor… was arraigned in Fitchburg District Court yesterday on charges of possessing child pornography and stealing from the parish.”
Source: Fitchburg priest charged with child porn: Police say money stolen from parish; images found by computer service“, By Paula J. Owen, Worcester Telegram & Gazette Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011

I’ve counted at least five (5) disturbing details about this article. Now we learn he’s fled the United States and the Diocese of Worcester doesn’t know where he went. Better make that seven (7) disturbing details. (Note I haven’t even checked to see if Fark has picked up this story… but, I expect they will soon!)
