Democrat Chris Murphy is the Junior Senator from The People’s Democratic Socialist State of Connecticut: A state effectively controlled by Democrats for the last 34 years, with one of the country’s highest costs of living, highest wealth inequity, highest electric utility rates, and some of the most generous welfare benefits, along with above-average prices for gasoline, homes, rents, and state taxes.
One might think with Connecticut’s current affordability problem (It’s ranked 42 out of 50) – in large part caused by his own Democrat Party, both at the State level and during Joe Biden’s time as America’s leader – Senator Murphy would be working to solve it as his first priority. But, it’s a Midterm Election year, and Trump-bashing seems to poll well among potential voters, so the Junior Senator appears to be adding his relentless litany of complaints against President Trump.
As a Minority member of the US Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee Chris Murphy was recently briefed on President Trump’s potential resumption of military action against the anti-West, anti-Israel, terror-funding, theocratic Islamic Republic of Iran, after which the Senator stated:
|
“In one of these briefings we did have a fairly detailed conversation about what the war plan would be if we restarted military operations. You heard a preview that it would be a short duration, um, plan. I will just say this. Their plan is insane. Um, it won’t… It, it won’t…
[Interviewer: Why?] It will lead to devastating escalation and the likely destruction of our commitment to the rule of law… This is the text book illegal war. They are fighting a war without congressional authorization. They haven’t sought congressional authorization, hasn’t even been a hearing in the Foreign Relations Committee. Every first year law student could tell you that this war is illegal. And so clearly the lawyers have no impact, no impact… It’s also clearly a contravention of international law and commitments that we have made to the rule of law to deliberately target civilians and use the harm or potential harm of civilians as leverage in war. It is also violative of commitments we have made to target political leadership at scale. And so if those are any part of any war plan, it will do grave damage to the US credibility in the long run in addition to being wildly escalatory.” |
That’s quite an impressive piece of rhetoric, and potentially very concerning!
But, let’s break down his statements and add some sanity to Senator Murphy’s alleged insanity:
“a fairly detailed conversation”
How detailed? Murphy can’t tell us, else he’d probably be leaking classified information.
“it would be a short duration plan”
On this point he’s correct: President Trump publicly stated any military action would be “short and intense“.
“Their plan is insane.”
As a Liberal Democrat he MUST give this answer to push his Democrat Party’s narrative that Trump is a lawless authoritarian fascist dictator descending into dementia.
“lead to devastating escalation”
Democrats Obama & Biden have appeased, funded, and admittedly enabled Iran to move closer to fielding nuclear weapons, which would surely lead to devastating escalation if used by Iran to threaten & coerce their enemies, especially Israel. While President Trump’s belief that Iran’s people would quickly rise up against their government if the USA & Israel took out their military may have been optimistic (with Iran’s massacre of 35,000 or so dissidents not helping his cause), Trump’s actions are working to reverse the damage Democrats have done.
“the likely destruction of our commitment to the rule of law.”
From a US Constitutional standpoint, Trump has protected it better than his Democrat predecessors Obama (ruled unconstitutional 13 times) and Biden (who ruled with a “quiet lawlessness“).
“This is the text book illegal war.”
The legality of Trump’s military action against Iran hasn’t been tested in either the Congress or in Courts, so neither we or he knows that its’ illegal.
“They are fighting a war without congressional authorization. They haven’t sought congressional authorization, hasn’t even been a hearing in the Foreign Relations Committee.” (note Murphy is a Minority member of that Committee)
Since the 1960′s every president except George Bush (41) and George Bush (43) has conducted military operations without seeking Congressional approval, even after the War Powers Act was passed by Democrats in 1973.
In fact, the biggest abuser of the War Powers Act was Democrat Barack Hussein Obama, who did not seek authorization to bomb Libya, claimed his war would last “days, not weeks”, said his authorization came from the United Nations (“international law”), and that Libya posed “a threat to the Nation” and a “looming Humanitarian crisis“. By misleading the American public and ignoring the Constitution and Congress Obama was derelict in his duties as president.
President Trump has repeatedly stated Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons poses a threat to the region, that any military action would be swift, and informed Congress his military action stopped within the War Powers Act’s 60-day deadline.
“Every first year law student could tell you that this war is illegal.”
Perhaps the Senator didn’t know that at least on lawyer defended Obama’s justification for launching his war on Libya:
“[The Islamic State in Libya] plainly threatens U.S. interests in the region and indeed had engaged in brutal murders of U.S. citizens and threats against the U.S. homeland.”
- “Constitutional War Initiation and the Obama Presidency“, Michael D. Ramsey, Duke University School of Law, published 29 March 2017.
“And so clearly the lawyers have no impact.”
“Clearly”? Lawyers and Congress are only impactful when there’s sufficient evidence to clearly establish guilt and a will to prosecute. The fact that Congress hasn’t passed the War Powers Act or impeached Trump over this issue, and lawyers haven’t successfully sued in court, suggests a lack of evidence.
“It’s also clearly a contravention of international law and commitments that we have made to the rule of law to deliberately target civilians and use the harm or potential harm of civilians as leverage in war.”
Deliberately targeting civilians – a tactic widely used by Islamic terrorists funded by Iran – is indeed condemned by the international community. But, Murphy doesn’t claim Trump is or will do this, and even if he did his claim couldn’t be verified. Also, by saying “potential harm of civilians” he already declares Trump guilty of it should he resume any military operation.
“It is also violative of commitments we have made to target political leadership at scale.”
The vast majority of Iran’s top political leaders, military leaders, and nuclear scientists were killed by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) during their first phase of Operation Roaring Lion on March 1, 2026. The United States has not engaged “at scale”.
“And so if those are any part of any war plan, it will do grave damage to the US credibility in the long run in addition to being wildly escalatory.”
By using the word “if” Chris Murphy is wisely protecting himself while suggesting that Trump is deliberately targeting Iran’s anti-West, militaristic, Islamic leaders and the country’s innocent civilians.
In short, Democrat Senator Murphy expressed concern about a plan whose details he can’t reveal, which can’t be verified even if he reveals them, involves substantial conjecture on his part as to actions or consequences, denies President Trump a presumption of innocence, and presumes that any upcoming military action against Iran would deliberately target civilians.
With all due respect, is Chris Murphy insane… or has he become Dopey Smurf?
Thanks for Reading! (and, a tip ‘o the Red Sox Cap to Hotair.com, who brought my attention to Chris Murphy’s quote.)
