Supercentenarians for Obama!

The Carolina Transparency, a service of the John W. Pope Civitas Institute, reports that as of today, 647,927 votes have already been cast in North Carolina for the upcoming Presidential Election on November 6th…
…including 1,252 votes by people who are 112 years old, who collectively live in four of the most heavily-contested counties in this election cycle. (Oh, and 70% of those votes are for Democrats).

Now, before we don the tinfoil hats or toss around accusations of voter intimidation, election fraud, or ballot manipulation, the “112 Yr Old” classification could just be a catch-all for ballots where age is not given, unknown, or undecipherable… after all, if there actually were 1,252 supercentenarians in North Carolina they would represent about 4,100% of the total number of known supercentenarians 112 years old or older as of 2010.

Still, it is nice to know that people are getting out the vote.

Minnesoda Makes Frei Edukashun Elegull!

As if banning imported United States flags wasn’t bad enough, Neil McAllister of The Register reports that the State of Minnesota now wants Coursera, a provider of absolutely free, online, university-level study courses, to receive “authorization” from the State prior to providing such services, in the interest of consumer protection: I guess the state’s afraid consumers might not get their money’s worth from the free course(s) they might take, or, that they’ll get ripped off financially.

Translation? As Mr. McAllister duly notes in his article, Minnesota wants to collect fees from Coursera and the institutions they do business with.

And that’s hardly surprising, given the Democrat Party’s control of Minnesota’s House and Senate from roughly 1971 to 2008, which has resulted in Minnesota having one of the worst budget deficits in the country in 2011.

Perhaps Minnesota should consider allowing the import of foreign-made United States flags – after charging importers and retailers an appropriate fee to “protect the consumer”, of course. It’s something I’m sure they’ll do… right after I run a spell check on the the title of this blog entry (although, I do believe I spelled “frei” correctly)!

YOU are Democracy’s Margin of Error

We’re deep into the Presidential election campaign, and with it the constant, seemingly endless legion of voter preference polls conducted by almost any news outlet, university, or individual capable of setting up an auto-dialer, using the statistical function on their calculator, and having a blog. Many of these polls, despite their dubious data sampling techniques, show the candidates in a neck-and-neck race to be the next President of the United States.

In this Constitutional Republic, the Right to Vote is fundamental to proper functioning of our country, and exercising that Right by voting is probably the single greatest civic responsibility you have as a citizen. So, it’s probably an extremely good idea to accurately ensure that (a) everyone eligible to vote is registered to vote, (2) they only vote once, and (c) their vote is properly counted: Anything else is tantamount to larceny.

Unfortunately, according to a February, 2012 study by the PEW Research Center1, when it comes to United States voter registrations, of the approximately 212.5 million US Citizens eligible to vote2:

So Wrong… those Party Logos!

After viewing the latest (and, as usual, excellent) online campaign ad by the Republican National Committee, I noticed the GOP’s new, streamlined logo used at the end of the video:

(the new GOP logo)
Is it just me, or does it appear their new logo incorporates the “wrong end” of the elephant?

This observation is no reflection on the Grand Old Party, or it’s platform, candidates, or supporters… just an observation.

While I’m on the subject (and, in the interest of fairness), that new logo by the Democratic National Committee has always reminded me of an automobile’s automatic transmission:

(the DNC logo) inspired by (PRNDL graphic, typical)

Once again, just an observation.

Perhaps in an effort to “dumb-down” their respective logos our major political parties have “out-dumbed” themselves.

BTW: Here’s that new campaign ad, in case you’re curious:

My Solution to Everything? Illegal Drugs!

For me, it was just an ordinary Tuesday: After taking a hot shower followed by a quick dusting of baby powder (corn starch), eating a delicious (corn) muffin for breakfast and pressing my shirt with (corn) starch while getting dressed, I jumped into my car and filled it up at my local gas station with gasoline containing 10% (corn-derived) ethanol. At lunch, I enjoyed a burrito loaded with (corn fed) chicken, sprinkled with corn kernels, and wrapped in a soft  (corn) tortilla, along with a bag of (corn) tortilla chips and a spring water in a biodegradable PLA (corn plastic) bottle. Finally, for dinner I enjoyed a 4 oz. portion of (corn-fed) lean beef, and afterward settled down to watch a movie with a big bowl of popcorn (uh…that’s corn).

And suddenly it dawned on me:

Wow, America uses a lot of corn!

The surprising part? Less than 10% of our corn production goes to corn products we eat directly, such as cereals and sweeteners – most of our corn crop goes to the production of biofuel (about 40%), followed closely by feed for livestock (about 36%).

With the summer drought reducing corn yields to the lowest level since 2006, prices are up almost 60% since June (according to TradingCharts.com). Despite this, even more corn will be needed for biofuel as the EPA increases the amount of ethanol in gasoline from 10% to 15%. Naturally, the price of food will rise, perhaps as much as 3.5% by the end of the year and up to 4% in 2013: Good thing the official inflation rate doesn’t include the price of food (or that corn-ethanol-laced gasoline either).

Swell…just swell.

Hey, I’ve got a crazy, out-of-the-box idea:

How about making biofuel from a plant we don’t depend on as food?

Sure, growing corn at high yields is easy, but corn produces the lowest amount of biofuel per acre than just about any other plant:

(Click to image to enlarge)

Chart: Oil per acre for various crops.

Instead of investing taxpayer money in Chinese-made wind turbines, Finnish-made electric cars, or fancy glass-tube photovoltaic solar collectors (which have now become expensive artwork) why not create an entire new industry around non-corn biofuels?

Consider the jathropa tree: Being toxic, it’s not edible by anything that walks, crawls, flies or swims, and it’s burns too fast for fireplace use. However, it provides over ten (10) times the amount of biofuel per acre than plain-ol’ corn. Heck, it’s already proven itself as an aviation biofuel.

Or, how about marijuana and poppies as the biofuel plants of choice?  Rather than fighting a “war” on illegal drugs, where swarths of these crops are burned, tons seized, users arrested, and many people killed, these crops could become a legally valuable industry, attracting investors, fostering economic growth, adding to our GDP and helping less-advantaged foreign countries. (Anyone recall sugar from the Philippines, tourism & cigars from Cuba, bananas from Latin America? Now, consider biofuels from Columbia, Afghanistan, Mexico… or Texas). There’d be plenty of new jobs for farmers, refiners, and government regulators, and the security used in the drug war could be assigned to other uses – like keeping our Nation safe (or sifting through all the information Uncle Sam’s wants to gather on his citizens… but, I digress). We’d have more corn to keep everyone (except edible livestock) happy, more biofuel to keep the environmentalists and hippies happy, and a viable, legal industry to keep investors, pensioners, Unions, tax-collectors, and car drivers happy.

And, “global warming”climate change” be damned: If those Global Warming conspirators are correct, warmer climates only make these crops more viable. They can stop trying to profiteer from the fear of “global warming” and instead profiteer by repurposing an existing, viable, highly profitable, multi-billion dollar industry.

By golly, did I just propose a solution to food shortages, illegal drug use, oil dependency, national security, unemployment, and depressed domestic & foreign economies all in one blog entry? No need to thank me: Just make sure I get a healthy cut of the profits and my commemorative statue has me looking thoughtful and focused, just like these guys – cuz’ I’m not very good at smiling.

Caveat: I’m also not a agriculturalist, chemical engineer, or economist, so feel free to add your well-considered comments below.

ObamaCare’s Future Foretold?

Just rambling here, but I’m guessing if no one bothered to read the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” (also known as “ObamaCare”), then they probably haven’t read this article written by BBC Health Correspondent Nick Triggle and published 12 September 2012:

“Hospitals ‘on brink of collapse’ “

Seems that Britain’s National Health System (NHS), founded in 1948, is having problems coping with a declining number of hospital beds combined with an aging population that’s living longer.

Hmmm…

Aging population? less hospital beds?? busier doctors?!? fewer doctors?!?!? Those things will never happen in America: Despite an aging population of baby-boomers, the Federal Government will certainly allow America’s can-do, entrepreneurial, free-market system to come to the rescue of the medical care industry, just like they did with Medicare, Medicaid, Amtrack, Social Security, the US Postal Service, the home mortgage industry, and the student loan industry.

Right?
