An Election Video all (Moderates) should Watch

A few days ago I posted an election video I believe all Christians should watch (although, even if you’re not a Christian it’s still worth viewing this very powerful and well-produced ad.)

Well, here’s another election-season video that I recommend everyone – regardless of religion, race, color, creed, sexual orientation, political affiliation etc. – should watch. Why? Because if you’re one who works for a living then your job depends on accomplishing what you’ve promised (or, signed onto) to the satisfaction of a boss who’ll objectively review and rate your performance and then decide if you deserve to keep your job.

When it comes to presidential politics, the President is the Executive-in-Chief and you’re the boss. So, grab your favorite beverage (perhaps even a snack), and check out this roughly 14-minute video summarizing the accomplishments of our 44th President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama:

And, as a boss who’s both civic-minded and responsible, be sure to submit your rating on November 6th, 2012 ;-)

Minnesota Flags Imported Flags.

While reading the Labor Day sales circular from Harbor Freight Tools I noticed this patriotic item with big savings but a curious caveat:

US Flags not Available in Minnesota?!?

“Not available in Minnesota”? …Really?!?

I thought, this couldn’t be due to a lack of Harbor Freight Tools locations in “The Land of 10,000 Lakes” (although, they’ve only got three locations), and, if Minnesota stopped being patriotic, suffered an exodus all of it’s Republicans, or decided to secede from the Union I certainly would have heard something about it by now.

As it turns out, Harbor Freight Tools isn’t crazy for not selling this American flag in Minnesota after all: The craziness fully rests with the State of Minnesota, who, thanks to State Rep. Tom Rukavina of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and an overwhelmingly Democratic-controlled legislature banned sales of foreign-made American Flags as of January 1, 2008*.

Minnesota’s not alone: Michigan recently passed a law requiring all state buildings to fly flags made in America. And, while Uncle Sam currently requires all flags flown on or in federal buildings to contain at least 50% American-made materials, the “All-American Flag Act” proposed by Democrats and passed in the US Senate would require them to be 100% American made.

(FYI: Of the $302.7 million worth of fabricated US flags, banners, bunting, and emblems shipped by American manufacturers in 2010, $3.2 million worth, or just 1.1%, was imported, with about 88% of those imports coming from China – source.)

As a flag-waving, God-loving US Citizen I’d like to say “It’s about time our lawmakers finally took a stand!” You know, just like they did with clothing, finished textiles, cameras, televisions, computers, tires, sardine canneries, athletic footwear, home goods, aftermarket auto parts, and hundreds of thousands of other products (Oh yeah – and possibly tools).

But, I’m not going to say it. Why? Because it doesn’t matter where our Nation’s flags (or, any other products we use) are manufactured. No matter what the product is, somebody’s going to find a way to make, sell, or service it better and/or cheaper. The job of our legislators is to help make sure that “somebody” is a company in the United States of America by making it easier and less expensive for Americans to innovate, create and operate business in the United States.

And, they’d better hurry: It looks like America’s competitiveness has slipped again, …for the 4th straight year.

* Minn. 2007 Laws, Chapter 135, Article 8, Section 2. – “[325E.65] SALE OF AMERICAN FLAGS. No person in the business of offering goods at retail may sell or offer for sale in this state an American flag unless the flag was manufactured in the United States of America. EFFECTIVE DATE. This section is effective January 1, 2008.”

The DNC’s New Direction?

Now, I’ve never been to North Carolina, let alone the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, site of this week’s 2012 Democratic National Convention. So, I might be “110%”* wrong on this supposition… but, it sure would be interesting (especially to the “tinfoil hat” crowd) if this observation were true:

Anyone else but me notice that if the Time Warner Cable Arena uses the “General End Stage” configuration for the 2012 Democratic National Convention, (with the main stage located on the East side of the arena) any practicing Muslims in the crowd will only have to turn about 15 degrees to their right (or, clockwise) to be properly pointed towards the Ka’bah in Mekkah for their daily prayers?

*I used to work for a Lawyer who, despite having an Engineering Degree from a very prestigious college, always extolled us to give “110% Percent” . Which may indicate that even the impossible isn’t impossible where lawyers are involved.

ReVOLTing News

Today, GM (aka: “Government Motors) announced they were suspending production of the Volt motor-generator hybrid car at their Detroit-Hamtramck plant for a month starting September 17th, due to slow sales. It’s the second time this year GM has stopped production due to slow sales, the first being in March.

While the Chevy Volt is an excellent example of engineering, aside from it’s really nifty transmission I view the car as evolutionary rather than revolutionary: I suspect few remember the Lohner-Porsche Elektromobil of 1898, designed by Ferdinand Porsche – a car propelled by electric motors in the front wheels powered by batteries charged by a small combustion engine, and capable of travelling 38 miles at 35 miles per hour on electric power alone – sound familiar?

However, some might remember GM/AeroVironment’s Impact electric vehicle of 1990 (which later became the EV-1), or the trio of diesel-generator hybrid prototypes produced by Chrysler (Dodge ESX), Ford (Prodigy), and GM (Precept) from a $1 billion program subsidized by the Federal Government back in 1993. And, while some of the Big 3′s current crop of hybrid vehicles no doubt owe their existence to those prototypes, the Volt is still an expensive choice: Despite a $7,500 $10,000 Federal tax subsidy, Volts spend an average of 60 days on dealer’s lots, with the average Volt buyer earning $175,000 a year – placing them in the 93rd percentile of income (or, the “7%”).

Perhaps the Volt (and, hybrids generally) will become more popular when batteries become less exotic, are capable of being recharged instantly, and can be recharged by the car* as it travels down long stretches of level highway at a leisurely (and potentially mandated) 55 miles-per-hour. But, I suspect that once government subsidies disappear, and/or a future US President allows America’s oil & gas industry to compete, the Volt will become just another very clever but economically impractical engineering exercise.

*Shortly after writing this I met a Fisker representative who gave me a tour of Fisker’s $110,000 Karma hybrid car: Up close, the car’s quite impressive and seems well-built. He reports that in “Normal” driving mode when the batteries run down – usually within 50 miles of driving – the gasoline-powered motor/generator set will start up and deliver more electricity than the batteries need to drive the car: Essentially, recharging the batteries while they are driving the car. Unfortunately, this also reduces the car’s effective miles-per-gallon to about 24 mpg.

An Election Video all Christians should watch.

This short but powerful video, released in March, 2012 by Catholics Called to Witness and produced by Creative Lab of West Palm Beach, Florida, is a stunning visual reminder of both the separation of Church and State and why the upcoming Presidential election is so important: It’s a must-see for all Christians, and anyone else who cherishes the traditional values of Life, Religious Freedom, and Marriage – regardless of religious affiliation or belief. (Apple users may want to increase the screen brightness slightly)

ObamaCare Biting Apple?

An August 15th article on ifoAppleStore.com reported that “numerous tipsters” in the UK and later the USA indicated Apple’s recently-hired Vice President of Retail, John Browett, initiated a number of staffing actions at Apple retail stores; specifically:

  1. Cease all recruiting and hiring events
  2. Make no promotions
  3. Immediately lay off newly-hired employees who are still on probation
  4. Reduce available hours for part-time employees
  5. Reduce or eliminate available overtime
  6. Lay off or fire employees who can only work more than 32 hours a week and not part-time

(In the above list, quoted from ifoAppleStore’s article, the emphasis is mine).

Although ifoAppleStore.com soon reported Mr. Browett admitted he made a mistake and “rescinded” those actions, the last three “actions” on his list caused me to pause and wonder: Did Apple consider these actions to increase the profitability of their retail operations (as reported)… or, were they starting to mitigate the potential increased costs of ObamaCare when it takes full effect in 2014?

After all, by now it’s well known that the “Affordable Care Act”, or “ObamaCare”, is anything but affordable: It mandates health care insurance for everyone, compels companies of 50 or more full-time employees to offer insurance, requires insurers cover preventive care, preexisting conditions, and birth control, limits insurers’ profits and overhead costs to 20% of revenue, burdens America’s healthier youth by making them purchasing more coverage than they need, levies fines on those who do not purchase insurance, and will hire legions of new IRS employees to enforce it all. (If it’s not well known to you, here’s one of a number of excellent summaries on the true costs of ObamaCare).

One way a company can avoid the penalty is to make sure they have no more than 50 full-time employees. For larger firms (like Apple), they can minimize their added costs by doing exactly what Mr. Browett instituted – in essence, a company taking those first steps towards a workforce of part-time employees in a nation which eventually may follow suit.

Now, there’s very little chance that an extremely successful, highly profitable firm with over 40,000 “full-time-equivalent”* employees would convert all but 49 of them to (a) part-time, (b) laid off, or (c) fired. But, it does pose an interesting question: Was Apple’s staffing actions really just a “mistake”, or is it a harbinger of what’s to come in the employment market with the advent of the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPaACA)”?

* “Fulltime Equivalent” = If four (4) part time employees are working 10 hours each per week, the represent one “full time equivalent” employee working a 40-hour week.

Update: Perhaps Apple’s (now-rescinded) actions were a warning of things to come after all: It appears that Darden Restaurants (owner of Olive Garden, Red Lobster, LongHorn Steakhouse, and other food chains) and Sears are reacting to ObamaCare’s anticipated higher health care costs by giving their employees vouchers to offset the cost of their health care premiums and/or cutting back employee hours below 30.5 per week. And, this could be just the beginning.
