Fleeting Red Sox Bliss

Hard to believe, but true:

On June 1st, 2012, the Boston Red Sox climbed out of last place in the American League East for the first time all season.

Unfortunately, the celebratory confetti barely had time to settle to the floor before they returned to the basement, where today they are tied with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Now, I’m no baseball pundit, but let’s see:

Boston’s former 3rd Base Coach, DeMarlo Hale (my personal pick for Red Sox Manager) is with the Baltimore Orioles, along with former Red Sox General Manager Dan Duquette (who’s now the Orioles Executive Vice-President of Baseball Operations) – a team that could very well finish 3rd in the AL East behind the Tampa Bay Rays and the team-everybody-loves-to-hate NY Yankees.

Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays, managed by former Sox Pitching Coach John “This is not a crisis” Farrell, share the basement with the BoSox.

Add to this an injuries list that rivals their 2010 season (Carl Crawford? Daisuke Matsuzaka? Jacoby Ellsbury? Andrew Bailey? Who ARE these people?!?), a new manager who lost his only World Series appearance and stopped coaching for 10 years prior to joining the Sox, problematic pitching, and a bunch of players in their last year of contract, and the Sox finding first place this year will be tougher than finding the artwork stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Of course… if all their injured players return playing well, they sort out their starting rotation problems, and Bobby Valentine resorts to carrots instead of sticks to motivate his team, the 2012 Red Sox could provide a comeback of biblical proportions – and, all sins forgiven.

Sugar and Spice, a Taxation Device

A couple of weeks ago I wondered how free we’d be if we were free from many foodstuffs.

Well, looks like Mayor Bloomberg of New York, NY is taking “sugar free” to a whole new level by proposing a ban on the sale of any fruit drink, sugared soda, energy drink, or sweetened coffee larger than 16 ounces by businesses.

Obviously, Mayor Bloomberg’s got his ear keen to the desires of the American public – 59 percent of which don’t want a sugar tax (in case you’re reading this Mr. Mayor, 71% don’t want a tax on salty foods, and 55% don’t want a tax on junk foods. Oh, and thanks for reading my blog).

My prediction? With New York losing about $45 Billion in gross income between 2000 and 2009 due to residents leaving the state (perhaps because New York has three of the top 10 most expensive areas to live – Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens) there’s little chance of a ban being passed. Instead, it will be “sold” to the public by saying rather than enacting an outright ban they’ll simply impose a hefty tax that can be used to erase the state’s mounting deficit educate the public on the dangers of sugar, help reduce & treat obesity, and subsidize healthier beverages: Just like what the states did with their huge tobacco lawsuit settlement.

Photo of the Day

Admittedly it is kinda cute, the kid touching the Preezy of the United Steezy and all (Oops… I meant, the kid “wearing a tie and all”)

That-a-boy, Barack!

But, c’mon now: Is there ANYONE this President won’t bow down to?!? ANYONE AT ALL?!?

And, according to the accompanying article, despite surfacing just now the photo was actually taken about three years ago: Perhaps it was attached to the back of Obama’s official long-form Birth Certificate.

BTW: This photo begs for a suitable caption – comment with your suggestions. ;-)

Which Witch Proposed This?

Courtesy of the Salem News of Salem, Massachusetts, May 17, 2012:

City almost bans the saxophone, By Tom Dalton Staff writer

“The saxophone ban was actually proposed and jotted down at the end of the list of regulations before an elected official, who happened to be seated in the audience, leapt to his feet in protest.”

Only ONE person (whose son plays the saxophone in school) noticed this?!? Was Salem’s Licensing Board working from Senator Nancy Pelosi’s playbook? Or, were they pre-occupied with checking if was still illegal in Salem MA for a person to sleep in a rented room without any clothes on?

Personally, they should have gone after the accordion :-)

Taxingly Studious Bureacrats

Peter Drucker once said “If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it”. So, if you measure the measurement of measuring, is improvement possible? Let’s ask Uncle Sam:
