In his excellent, and some would say prescient, 1948 book “Nineteen Eighty-Four” author George Orwell – himself a Socialist – describes a Socialist State called Oceanania where the population is raised, taught, and protected by a seemingly benevolent but ultimately repressive “Big Brother“. It’s a book which should be required reading by everyone as a cautionary tale of the dangers of societal control taken to the extreme.

Within this future dystopia, one small part of making sure the masses remain law-abiding is a gradual replacement and whittling down of the English language by the “Ministry of Truth” until the ability to even contemplate any action considered criminal, let alone communicate it, becomes impossible. This new language was called “Newspeak”.

Has Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, embraced George Orwell’s Socialist dystopia? Continue reading

Get Your Vaccine, Maxine.

A close relative of mine is getting their COVID-19 Vaccination today (I believe they said it was the Moderna concoction, so they’ll be another shot in about 28 days if Joe Biden – who has already received his second dose – allows it).

To ease the sting a bit, try singing the song “Vaccine“, Continue reading

Has Obama Built a Future of “Tomorrows”?

In 2012, at the end of former (P)resident Obama’s first term, having witnessed him divide America by color, wealth, success, and possessions, accuse law enforcement of systemic brutality, apologize to the world for America’s success, deny spying on innocent Americans while doing just that, using US institutions to target political and social groups he didn’t like, and privately work against our Allies while publicly supporting them, I created this graphic: Continue reading

Who are the Heretics Spouting Rhetoric?

In Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s 1839 play “Richelieu; Or the Conspiracy“, his character Cardinal Richelieu, a statesman attempting to prevent his assassination, says in Act II, Scene II:

“True, This!
Beneath the rule of men entirely great,
The pen is mightier than the sword.
Behold, the arch-enchanters wand, itself a nothing!
But taking sorcery from the master-hand
To paralyse the Caesars, and to strike
The loud earth breathless!

Take away the sword, States can be saved without it!”

And while pens of the ink or electron variety are strong, spoken rhetoric, being more immediate and personal, may be stronger still. The clever use of intelligent rhetoric is a necessary skill for anyone seeking or keeping power or influence, and that includes activists, protesters, insurrectionists, revolutionaries, anarchists, and even Presidents, Presidential wanna-be’s, CEOs, and even the Press.

The problem with rhetoric is that it can be used for good or evil, to build or destroy, to motivate or chastise: A problem which will persist as long as humans exist.

And so, while the Democrats in the United States Congress attempt to pass – in record-breaking time if successful – an Article of Impeachment against President Trump for “Inciting insurrection” based on his “rhetoric”, it might be helpful for them to consider these rhetorical statements Continue reading

Know Your “Revolutions”!

While having some lunch on Wednesday, January 6th I turned on the news and noticed there was an awful lot of “Constitutional Rights” being exercised at our nation’s capital in Washington D.C. at the exact same time the U.S. Congress was in session to exercise their own “Constitutional Powers” to certify a person as President of the United States.

Astute readers will notice the subtle distinction: Everyone in America has Constitutional Rights, including members of Congress, but only Congress has Constitutional Powers. As our duly – and, hopefully, fairly and honestly – elected representatives, the members of Congress exercise their powers ostensibly on our behalf.

The “mostly peaceful” pro-Constitution supporters of President Trump who visited Washington D.C. on that day got me to thinking about how the events of that one day – one might say “Revolutionary events” – compared to other recent protests in America’s history. And, after reflecting on all the protests which have happened during 2020 I wondered Continue reading
