Helpful context: Julius Rosenberg (code name: “LIBERAL“) and his wife Ethel Rosenberg (code name: “GREENGLASS“) were recruited by the Soviet Union to spy on the United States. Their identities as Communist spies were uncovered by a secret program by the U.S. Army’s Signal Intelligence Service, codenamed “VERNONA“, designed to monitor Soviet communications, spying, and espionage activities against the United States.
The couple was part of six people principally involved in a Soviet spy ring to send classified information about the US Atomic Energy Program back to the U.S.S.R.:
Ethel Rosenberg’s brother David Greenglass (code name: “KALIBR”), an Army sergeant and ardent Communist assigned to the US atomic bomb program in Los Alamos, NM, passed technical details of America’s atomic bomb to Julius Rosenberg for forwarding to the Soviet Union.
“Everywhere — even at Los Alamos — [David Greenglass] preached Communism, trying to persuade fellow G.I.s and co-workers that they would someday prosper in a utopian society free of squalor and injustice.”
So, on June 19th let’s celebrate a time when the United States intelligence, law enforcement, and justice systems were devoted to defending the Constitution of the United States “…against all enemies, foreign and domestic…“, instead of singling out Americans who wish to defend the Constitution, Personal Freedoms, and Individual Rights.
