In 1967 the Boston Red Sox were in dire shape. The team last winning season was 1958, only 8,000 fans showed up for Opening Day, and there was talk of tearing down Fenway Park and replacing it with a domed stadium.

Unfortunately, the season didn’t start well, with the Red Sox in 9th place in the American League early on, and losing as many games as they were winning right up to the All-Star Game in early July. The team was mediocre.

And win they did:

After the All-Star break they went on a 10-game winning streak, finished the regular season with a 92–70 (.568) record, and won the American League Pennant on the last game of the season by beating the Minnesota Twins (along with a little help from the California Angels, who beat the Detroit Tigers 8-5). The American League Champion Red Sox continued on to play the World Series for the first time since 1946, and in an unfortunate repeat of history, lost again to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.

The Red Sox 22-win improvement from the 1966 to 1967 season was their third best. The 10-game winning streak their second-longest. They rose from 9th place to 1st in the American League. The 4-way race to win the American League Pennant was perhaps the closest in baseball history. And the BoSox came oh-so-close to winning the World Series.

The 1967 Season would be called the “Impossible Dream“… and the Sox the “Impossible Dream” Team. Carl Yastrzemski, Tony Conigliaro, Rico Petrocelli, George Scott, Ken Harrelson, Jim Lonborg, Sparky Lyle, and more…

Now, 59 years later, the 2026 Red Sox – after being 15.5 games out of first place in the American League East and 14 games below .500 on June 24th – haven’t just turned their season around but have done so in record-setting fashion:

It seems they’re doing the impossible. Could we be witnessing the second coming of the “Impossible Dream”?
