Sorry, I Don’t Trust You.

Oops… I don’t mean YOU, dear readers of my humble blog*, I mean those people at General Social Survey who recently announced this disturbing poll result:

“…only one-third of Americans say most people can be trusted.”

(read the entire article here, courtesy of MyWay.com…whom I’m a little bit leary of anyway, as they’re owned by IAC Search & Media, who controls “…one of the largest [family of websites] in the world, comprised of more than 150 brands and products.”)

Now, this is usually the part where I’d make a witty remark (like, “There’s only two people I trust: Mom and God, and in that order, because I’ve seen Mom.”), pose a well-considered hypothesis (for example: “Could the increase in distrust be due to attacks on mainstream religion, destruction of the family unit by the “nanny state” or America’s declining economic status, a constant barrage of bad news from the press, the invasion of electronic technology into every aspect of our lives, or some other such thing like that there?”), or even inject an editorial comment on the article (say, like “Did anybody else notice that, since 1972, nearly 8 out of 10 African-Americans “…felt that ‘you can’t be too careful’”, and now it seems our current President of the United States is undermining Anglo-American social, political, and religious institutions in the USA? Just asking, not accusing.”)

But, I’m not going to do any of those things…because, I trust you’ll read the entire article and judge for yourself.

*(well, OK, maybe I don’t trust whoever’s trying to log onto my WordPress account from China…but, I digress…)

Chris Matthews’ Quote of the Day

I try to avoid NBC’s “Meet the Press” hosted by Chris Matthews like the plague: Every time I see the show I think a better name for it would be “Me, Depressed”.

Why? Because I didn’t know I was a paranoid, survivalist, narrow-minded, disrespectful, racist, homophobic, obstructionist, terrorist teabagger until the occasionally-forgetful Matthews told me. All this time I thought I was just a polite, respectful, hard-working, religious, fair-minded, patriotic, supporter of America’s Constitutional Republic simply trying to improve their life in the greatest country on Earth.  Silly me!

However, while doing a little channel-surfing during breakfast this morning I happened to stop on NBC long enough to hear Chris – once a speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter – unload this linguistic gem:

“The great thing about Bill Clinton is his hands are completely in touch with the average American.”

In touch with the “average american”?  No kidding!

Way to stay classy, Chris.

Take the Red Sox Postseason Failures Test!

Are you a true Red Sox fan? If so, then answer this:

Which One of these Red Sox Postseason Failures ISN’T like the Others?
(click any choice to open a new window with the correct answer)
1 – The 1946 World Series

Red Sox Shortstop Johnny Pesky’s late throw to home plate in Game 7 of the World Series allows Enos Slaughter to score, giving the St. Louis Cardinals the Championship

2 – The 1967 World Series

Red Sox First Baseman Bill Buckner allows a ground ball to pass between his legs, causing the Met’s Ray Knight to score and allowing the Mets to win Game 7 of the Championship.

3 – The 2003 American League Championship

NY Yankees Third Baseman Aaron Boone hits the first pitch thrown by Tim Wakefield in the 11th inning of the ALCS for a home run to left field, allowing the Yankees to win the Pennant – only to lose the Championship against the Florida Marlins in six games.

4 – The 2013 World Series

During Game 3 of the Championship series between Boston and the
Cardinals in St. Louis, third base umpire Jim Joyce levies an obstruction charge against Red Sox Third Baseman Will Middlebrooks with
two outs in the bottom of the ninth, allowing First Baseman Alan Craig to score and St. Louis to win the game.

I’m a Random Rambling Man…

Sorry for the lack of postings lately, but my attention’s been focused on (1) coming up to speed at my new job, and (b) listening to a couple of feet of my intestines gradually dissolve as I watch the Red Sox try to win the 2013 MLB Championship.

So, as I work to impress my new Boss(es), assemble a few Sox photos for my site, and contemplate new blog topics, please enjoy these random ramblings:

  • The National Hurricane Service has named hurricanes after women, men, and, if necessary, the Greek alphabet. Say, how about naming them after online chat  abbreviations and emoticons, like Hurricane WTF, 4COL, ADIH, OMG!, FTW, FEMA, =:-O and #@&%! ? (see a list of many more candidates here)
  • My local Burger King has a sign on the outside of their door reading “No Still or Video Photography Allowed in this Store“. On the inside of the door is another sign reading “This Store uses Video and Audio Surveillance“. I’d have taken a picture of the signs but I’m not allowed to and apparently they already have.
  • Speaking of fast food restaurants, here’s a sure fire way to liven things up the next time you visit one: When the counter person asks for a name for your order, just say “Obama“, and then take a seat somewhere near the back of the dining room. When “Obama” is called, let them repeat it a little louder before picking up your food. Drives Liberals and Progressives crazy! Just don’t do it too often or you might find out who the illegal gun owners are.
  • Why do they call it “Pound Cake” when the package only weighs 10 ounces?
  • During the past few months I’ve noticed my local Walmart, Dollar Tree, Stop & Shop (what “Giant” stores are called in New England) and iParty (oops…they’re now Party City) have all rearranged their store layouts to have fewer, wider aisles with shelves that are both shorter and lower. Are they making room for pallets of cheap, piled-high holiday merchandise, or just downsizing their inventories in this “New Economy” I’ve heard so much about (and, experienced)?
  • Has anyone else noticed that both JCPenny and Nordstrom have redecorated their stores with predominantly white walls? IMHO, while it gives Penny’s an open, upscale look, it definitely cheapens Nordstrom’s (frankly, I think Nordstrom started going downhill when they got rid of their grand piano – listening to it’s dulcet tones was the only thing I could afford in the entire store ;-)

CT’s ObamaCare CYA of the Day

As promised, the State of Connecticut did indeed publish online their list of ObamaCare Health Exchange Plans on October 1st – after having a blank web page right up until the very last day (9/30/2013 at 10:43:21 AM, according to their own admission).

As Murphy says “If it wasn’t for the last minute nothing would get done.”, so kudos for finally accomplishing this. But has anyone noticed the title of their very first posting?

“Updated — August 30, 2013″

“Updated” thirty days before they posted it on 09/30/13? Really?!? This means the original information must have been created at least a month prior to it’s posting. And, if it was, why wasn’t the information posted on August 30th, to give applicants a chance to see what might be available?

Was it typical government bureaucracy? Trouble getting insurance carriers to sign on to ObamaCare? A particular focus on making sure government-supplied information is complete, accurate, and easy to understand?

…or, CT’s ObamaCare CYA of the Day?

Countdown to Catastrophe in CT?

If you’ve already read my post on Kaiser’s “cool” Calculator for figuring out if you’re going to save as much as $2,500 per year in healthcare premiumsas promised by President Obama seemingly countless times – then you already know that some of you need to select an ObamaCare Health Exchange starting October 1, 2013.

Connecticut residents in particular will be pleased to know that, as of 3:26 PM Central Daylight Time (oops, sorry…that would be “4:26 PM” in CT, my bad) the number of Health Care Exchanges posted on CT’s Health Insurance Marketplace is exactly ZERO.

But, hey, don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself:

Connecticut’s “access health CT”
Connecticut’s Health Insurance Marketplace:
Plan Designs.

If you’ve got some free time, why not check back at that site while the clock conveniently shown below ticks down – perhaps CT will avoid a catastrophe…

…although, given CT’s record on tax burden, budget deficits, gasoline prices, gun control, busways, high-speed rail, and soon maybe even domesticated pets, I’m not too optimistic.

BTW: I’m told CT will have three ObamaCare Exchanges, and one of those won’t be Aetna, whose World Headquarters is conveniently located within easy walking distance to Connecticut’s State Capitol Building – whether it’s delicious irony, or simply good business sense by Aetna I’ll leave for you to decide.
