Hungry? Play “ObamaNo’s” Pizza!

Recently, the Washington Examiner’s Paul Bedard wrote about another unforeseen consequence of the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010“, also known as “ObamaCare(or, for you lawyers and lawmakers, “H.R. 3590 (111th)“).

It’s not the twenty (20) new or increased taxes on individuals and businesses, the 3.8% Medicare Surtax on income from dividends, capital gains, interest, and rents, or the 26-or-so reasons why the IRS needs more agents.

Nope: It’s Dominos Pizza concern that ObamaCare’s new Menu Labeling rules would require them to post 34,000,000 nutritional information signs in each of their stores: One for each combination of pizza they offer. At “almost $5,000″ per store, it would cost Dominos at least $36,720,000 to outfit all 7,344 of their US locations.

Five grand per store sure sounds like a lot of cash, and reading through 34,000,000 pizza combinations is sure to get boring. So, how about making it both inexpensive and entertaining?

Play “ObamaNo’s Pizza” – the latest Obama Slot Machine!

Yes siree, if you enjoyed the first two installments of the “Obama Slot Machine” -  Stash-O-Cash” and “Bo’Money! – you’re sure to enjoy “ObamaNo’s Pizza“: It’s got more reels, tasty food symbols, and almost as many possible combinations as Dominos has pizzas!

Check it out now – and, if you play, better hope you get a winning combination before you figuratively starve to death courtesy of ObamaCare and the FDA.

Oh, and if you’re a bigwig honcho from Dominos Pizza, feel free to use this concept. (By the way, my favorite pizza is a large thin crust, with sausage, mushrooms, extra cheese and a side of breadsticks and marinara dipping sauce… whatever that combination is on your chart!)

“Actiontown” is Here!

Those of you following this blog already know I recently teased you about “Actiontown” – a game map I wrote for the completely free, open-source game “Cube 2: Sauerbraten“. But, for those seeing this for the first time here’s the obligatory screen shot and description:

Downtown "Actiontown"!

Actiontown: With the clock approaching midnight on a warm Summer night, the subway pulls into it’s last stop for the evening – “Actiontown” – a town small enough to be just about anywhere in the USA but large enough to have a fancy computer store, power plant, water treatment facility, Union Hall, and even the State’s Capitol! As you stop by the local fast food joint for a “4th Meal” things seem a little too quiet: Better forgo that taco and reach for your shotgun.

Despite receiving lukewarm reviews by the Sauerbraten community, if you like a large, multiplayer map having an urban theme with plenty to explore – and your computer is set up for gaming – then I invite you to check out a gallery of screenshots, or visit my “Cube Maps” page for a full description of the map along with a link to download it.

Oh, and a BIG tip of the (Red Sox) cap to the major videogame developer who’s already taken a look at it.

Today’s Fishing Lesson

At severe risk of understatement, my Dad was an avid fisherman. He loved fishing, whether it was surf casting for blues and stripers from an ocean beach (usually in the wee hours of the morning), spending a lazy summer afternoon bobbing for perch along a quiet lake, or fly casting off a marina’s dock early in the morning for some fish to complement breakfast. He found it both relaxing  (grab a beer, sit back, talk to other fishermen, and watch your poles) and stimulating (if you rig your fishing pole to give blues a fighting chance, it can take over 30 minutes to land a hooked one), and never suffered from “fisherman’s ego“.

And, he introduced all his kids to fishing, perhaps in part due to the old adage:

“…if you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour; if you teach him to catch a fish you do him a good turn.”*

Now that my Dad’s doing his fishing off of this mortal coil, I wonder how he might react if that time-worn adage was updated to reflect today’s realities:

“…if you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour; if you teach him to catch a fish you can…

* Commonly written as “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.”, the phrase’s origin is discussed here.

Found: 1st Draft of the Declaration of Independence!

It stands to reason that an important document such as the United States’ Declaration of Independencethe cornerstone document for the creation of a new nation – would have certainly gone through a few “rough drafts” or “revisions” before the 13 Colonies agreed to a final version: According to the Library of Congress, Jefferson’s “original Rough draught” was revised by the Committed 47 times and then by the Continental Congress 39 more times before officially being signed on July 4, 1776.

But, what’s really exciting is that a fragment of earlier “first draught” may have been found! Here’s the text:

“The Parliamentary Monarchy is a political movement organically associated with international imperialism and antagonistic to all action for liberation and to progressive movements in the world. It is racist and fanatic in its nature, aggressive, expansionist, and colonial in its aims, and fascist in its methods. Great Britain is the instrument of the Parliamentary Monarchy movement, and geographical base for world imperialism placed strategically in the midst of the New World to combat the hopes of these thirteen Colonies for liberation, unity, and progress. Great Britain is a constant source of threat vis-a-vis peace in these thirteen colonies and the whole world. Since the formation of the United States of America will destroy the Monarchy and it’s imperialist presence and will contribute to the establishment of peace in the world, the People of these United States look for the support of all the progressive and peaceful forces and urge them all, irrespective of their affiliations and beliefs, to offer us people all aid and support in their just struggle for the liberation of their homeland”

“The demand of security and peace, as well as the demand of right and justice, require all states to consider Parliamentary Monarchy an illegitimate movement, to outlaw its existence, and to ban its operations, in order that friendly relations among peoples may be preserved, and the loyalty of citizens to their respective colonies safeguarded.”

Whoa, what’s this: “…will destroy the Monarchy’s and imperialist presence…”? “…outlaw its existence”?? “…ban its operation”?!? Those are confrontational, almost reckless claims by a group of colonies that are barely united, with no real governmental institutions, a rag-tag army, and essentially no navy. I’m sure glad they decided on that “Rough draught” with it’s (47+39) = 86 revisions – things turned out a lot better!*

Unfortunately, the “draft” I presented is pure fiction: It’s actually a re-worded version of Articles 22 & 23 of “THE PALESTINIAN NATIONAL CHARTER: Resolutions of the Palestine National Council, July 1-17, 1968″ - and, they aren’t talking about Great Britain, but rather Zionism, and Israel as its instrument.

And, as of today, the United Nations General Assembly (despite objections by the United States and, of course, Israel) recognized Palestine as a “nonmember state” by a vote of 138-9 with 41 abstentions. Of course, the U.N.’s action did not confer or bestow statehood upon the Palestinian people – Palestine still has a long way to go to achieve that.

One way they could substantively move towards responsible Statehood would be to consider their current charter a “Rough draught” and ask the world community what revisions they might offer – I’m guessing there might be more than 89.

* well, aside from the War of 1812 and the Civil War… those were pretty painful.

Disturbing: When $29k = $69k.

Did you know? In Pennsylvania, a single, healthy mother with two healthy children ages 1 & 4 in daycare and earning $29,000 a year in gross income has more net income and benefits than a person earning $69,000 a year.

When $29K = $69K?
(Click for a larger image)

What concerns me even more if she were earning zero income per year she would have about the same net income and benefits as a person who earns $54,000 a year.

It makes me wonder what this chart might look like for other states – like California, Illinois, Connecticut, Massachusetts, etc.?

For those wanting more information, click here to download and read the full presentation “Welfare’s Failure and the Solution“, by Gary D. Alexander, Secretary of Public Welfare , Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as republished by The American Enterprise Institute , July 2012: It’s an eye-opener – and probably includes suggestions and recommendations that will never see widespread adoption.

A tip of the (Red Sox) cap to Tyler Durden of Zero Hedge for including this chart in his article “When Work is Punishment: The Tragedy of the Welfare State

So Wrong? Religious Bathroom Art

When it comes to religious / artistic expression I don’t mind the occasional lawn Jesus, backyard Madonna*, or Baby Jesus with the Holy Hand Grenade… and, I certainly don’t mind when an expression of dubious distinction meets it’s match; to wit:

Old and busted:

  • 1987: Artist Andres Serrano, using a taxpayer-funded grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, photographs a Christ on the Cross submerged in a jar of his own urine, proclaiming the work as “art” (shown here, may be NSFW due to graphic images of the artwork and violence by rioting Christian fundamentalists).

Exciting and New!

  • 2012: Talk show host Glenn Beck, using his own money, submerges a bobble-head doll of Barack Hussein Obama  in a jar of his own urine (actually, beer), proclaiming the work as “art” (see here, comments are NSFW) …and, “yours” for only $25,000.

Curiously Disturbing:

  • 2011: An anonymous artist, in response to an attack on Serrano’s photograph in Avignon, France by “Christian fundamentalists“, releases a photograph of a resurrecting Christ seemingly submerged in urine (see here), proclaiming it “as a rejection of Andres Serrano’s profiteering” – and, just in time for Easter!

(Frankly, I’m surprised no one considered such an “artistic” treatment for the Baby Jesus – considering the time of year and the propensity of infants to use diapers ;)
* Have you noticed how backyard Virgin Marys seem to survive catastrophic fires, explosions, and tornadoes virtually unscathed? You know there’s more than “luck” involved there!
