8 Things McDonald’s Should do Right Now

It’s no secret that America’s bastion of fast food – McDonald’s – has been struggling the past couple of years. A troubling sign, as those in the know know that as McDonald’s goes so goes the World’s economy (don’t believe me? Click here.)

So, on the premise that McDonald’s is “too big to fail“, here’s my list of eight things they should do in order to get their financials, and those of the world, back on track. After all, how else will they able to afford the $15/hr. wages people Unions were protesting for?

Bring back the McRib Sandwich

No idea why they got rid of this. It must have been popular – just ask Burger King, who put a smaller version on their $1 Menu (the “BK Rib“). Not near a Burger King? No problem: Pick up a Banquet “Boneless Pork Riblet Meal” for – you guessed it – a dollar.

Give us a $1 Value Drink.

$1.39 for a 16 ounce drink? Really?!? The markup on soda is astronomical, and all’s you do is give us the cup – we have to add ice, soda, a cap and straw. It’s no wonder my local McDonald’s won’t let me bring in my own $0.89 24-ounce soda from the gas station next door.

Bring back Chicken McBites

Let’s see: You got rid of these but thought “Mighty Wings“, which we already know was a mighty FAIL, was a great idea? Pure genius :-(

Drop the price of Chicken Wraps to $2.99

When McDonald’s ran a promotion on these awhile back for $1.00 each most of the McDonald’s near me sold out on the first day – and lost about 75 cents on each one sold. So, instead of charging $3.99, how about dropping the price by $1, adding a soda or coffee for $1 more, and watch as people drop their croissant sandwiches and coffees from Dunkin’ Donuts, their 6-inch subs from Subway, and their fancy arugula wraps and custom-built lattes from Starbucks and make a bee line to your door?

Two strips of bacon for $1.00?!?

Perhaps China wants to make a quick buck off their $7.1 Billion purchase of Smithfield Foods, America’s largest pork processor. Frankly, it would be better simply to buy a BK Rib Sandwich at Burger King and slap the pork patty on top of the McDonald’s burger. (Did I just invent a new menu item?)

Put the “Happy Egg” back on the breakfast menu.

Scrambled eggs, a hash brown, and a juice or coffee for a nice low price: That’s how I like my breakfast. Anything fancier and I’m off to iHop or Bickford’s. For the kids, substitute apple slices for the hash brown to keep the parents happy.

How about “Flavored Fries”?

Think of it as “Shake N’ Bake“® for french fries: Sell us a bag of fries and a choice of powdered flavor packets  – say, chili pepper, ranch, BBQ, Hamburger, Cinnamon, etc. – sprinkle the powder into the bag and shake it up. BTW: If you need help checking to see if Kraft Foods has a patent on this, or if your fancy marketing phrase for this product isn’t trademarked, then I’m your guy – and, if you like the idea send me an email to announce my royalty payment :-)

Bring the Lobster Roll back to the USA

Now I’m really dating myself: Remember when Micky D’s sold a lobster roll for $3.99? Absolutely true – in 1994 . It’s impossible for them to sell one at that price today – just ask Maritime Canadians, who pay $6.50 for theirs – unless, perhaps, it contained imitation Lobster product made from pollack, and called it the “Lobstah Roll“. They could still say it’s real fish, because it is; they just have to make sure to have Donnie Wahlberg voice the ads – it’s “Lob-STAH“, not “Lobster”.

My Super Bowl Game Prediction

I’ll be watching my “New England Patriots America’s Game 3 DVD Set Collection” while doing a couple loads of laundry.

Yep. I’m serious.

..and, it seems I won’t be alone, what with 18,000 tickets for the big event going unsold 48 hours before kickoff, according to CBS New York.

I don’t know if it’s the ticket prices ($3,000 to $14,000 each, plus a hotel room at about $150, along with the usual expenses for drinks, food, drinks, souvenirs, tips, and of course, drinks), the fact that no New England team is playing (Patriots? Too hurt. Jets? Too untalented. Giants? Too pathetic.), or the location (New Jersey? Really?!? What exit?).

Perhaps it’s the lackluster economy, memories of the Boston Marathon terrorist attack, Global Warming Global Cooling, or that watching the game on a ginormous high-definition flat screen TV with surround sound broadcasting umpteen various camera angles and closeups, an unceasing barrage of team, player, and statistical minutiae, the obligatory Gatorade shot, and clever ads* with your food, booze, Barcalounger already paid for and just outside of arm’s reach makes attending the event in person rather anti-climactic.

Or maybe it’s the simplest reason of all: It’s a school night.

And, for those of you who’ve read down this far, here’s my actual prediction… which you can take to the bank (just don’t try to deposit it, based on my prediction for the 2013 Boston Red Sox :-)

Seattle Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos 24-21 with a late-game field goal. (The fact that I like Pete Carroll and am not a fan of Peyton Manning has absolutely nothing to do with it – honest!)

*I may be recording the game, though: Rumor is Apple will run an ad to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Macintosh.

Wealth Redistribution’s Working in CT!

Problem is, I’m not sure in with direction the “redistribution” is occurring:

Is it from rich to poor?

“27,000 Unemployment Benefit Recipients Received Someone Else’s Tax Info: State”

…seems they received their UC-1099-G Unemployment Compensation income statements with someone else’s Social Security number and personal information on it – allowing them to “augment” their income through identity theft if they wanted to be, shall we say, “entrepreneurial“.

Or, from poor to rich?

“Comptroller Kevin Lembo today announced that [Connecticut's] General Fund is currently on track to end Fiscal Year 2014 with a surplus of $273.3 million”

…frankly, I’m amazed that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy – does the “P.” stands for “Progressive“? – was able to turn around the State’s $3.6 BILLION deficit in 2007 into a surplus. The $1.5 Billion in concessions by Connecticut’s public service Unions certainly helped, but perhaps it was Gov. Malloy’s 21% increase in utility rates, the largest tax increase in Connecticut’s history (along with a tax amnesty to go along with it), a record amount of inheritance taxes from the dearly wealthy departed, a host of budget diversions, and massive borrowing to cover operating expenses that did the trick.

It’s a shame CT doesn’t follow the example of Texas, who’s expecting an $8.8 BILLION surplus from Republican Governor Rick Perry’s “Texas Budget Compact“:

“…truth-in-budgeting, support a stricter constitutional limit on spending, make the small business tax exemption permanent, preserve our strong Rainy Day Fund, and cut wasteful and redundant government programs and agencies.”

On the bright side, CT’s Democrats proposed to give part of the surplus back to taxpayers by reinstating the tax exemptions on clothing and non-prescription drugs they eliminated in 2011… only kidding, it was proposed by Connecticut Republicans.

Oh well… Thanks for reading!

I’m invited to Join the White House?!?

With the New England Patriots increasingly on the short end of the 2013 AFC Championship Game as I write this, a quick check of my email provided this humorous diversion:

I’ve got absolutely no idea how Linkedin decided to make this recommendation to me:

(my invitation to join the White House)
(click to embiggen)

Perhaps Linkedin didn’t see my photos of Tea Party Rallies, or read some of my blog posts (such as this one, this, or maybe even this entertaining one) - if they did they probably would have suggested another one of their many Groups.

I’m not concerned, though. I’m sure the recommendation came from their professional network of high-powered computers, using algorithms that – written by humans – are bound to be imperfect. And, it’s not like Linkedin is trying to collect all of your social and professional information and share it with every government agency, while taking steps to disguise their activities…

…like the National Security Administration (NSA) is doing.

I’ll let you pick the tag line:

  • Pretty sure P.C. Richard is going to have plenty of these tablets left in stock :-)
  • No wonder their sales people work on commission! LOL
  • At least you’ll be saving over $200! ;-)

Attention Photo Buffs!

As I’m still elbow-deep sorting, selecting, editing, and annotating  the Red Sox photos I took during 2013 prior to adding them to my ever-expanding gallery, here’s a couple of panoramas I put together to whet your appetite (which, frankly, should be very well whetted after the Holidays)

  • Hampton Beach, New Hampshire – For those who’s least favorite Season is “Winter“.  (and, yes, it has a small error that I’ll eventually fix)
